As a Web administrator you might have already dealed with proxies … there are some people that deal with proxies to access “forbidden” sites from their working place, school, but mainly spammers, hackers and swindlers manage proxies to hide their true identities.
They come to damage your site at:
- Intend to penetrate your system.
- Creating multiple accounts.
- Spamming your forum.
- Managing resources to get your pages back.
- Consuming your band width and system requirements.
Either other malicious intentions might motivate this people going against your site using the proxies.
Consequences may be disastrous. Financial losses. Time or data loss, useless resource manipulation, site unavailability, data flown…
You should know that you cannot retrieve the real ip from your visitor's if they're using anonymous proxies.
By using anonymous proxies, this people are not feeling legally afraid and may coming back under another proxy if you have previously banned them.
They acquire the proxies over specialized sites that are listing public proxy server, from software programs and also through VPN services. It´s enough for them to change the browser setup configuration and the trick is done.
A brand new tendency is rising to light, proxies under the form of a Web-Browser, also known as “CGI-proxies”. These last ones allow everyone, either skill less, to become invisible…
